Mixer Application

Mixer Application: Sodium Hypochlorite

Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach) is often used with different types of cleaning chemicals and is also a difficult service for the submerged components (shaft and impeller) of the mixer. The most commonly used lining for the shaft and impeller is Chlorobutyl 4624 rubber.

Chlorobutyl 4624’s low flexural modulus paired with a high elongation to break allows the material to move freely with the metal impeller during operation. This is imperative for maximizing the lifespan of the impeller especially.

Other linings are used to protect mixer components from bleach such as hot dip galvanization (e.g. Teflon, Plastisol) and hand layup of fiberglass. The life expectancy of these linings is greatly reduced due to chemical resistance, the thickness of the material, or the inability to flex while the mixer is in use.

The difficulty of dealing with lined shafts and impellers on larger vessels is due to the shaft and impeller being welded to each other before the application of the specified lining. As a result of the submerged components being welded, it is difficult to get this assembly into the tank and installed. These components must be welded to each other and properly sandblasted to allow for the lining to adhere properly to all surfaces.
